Which Products Need FBA Labeling Before Shipment?

An FBA shipment can be packed perfectly, arrive on time, and still be delayed at receiving because the wrong barcode is on the unit. For sellers asking which products need FBA labeling, the practical answer is this: most inventory sent to Amazon needs a scannable identifier tied to your specific listing, unless Amazon has approved the product to use its existing manufacturer barcode.

That distinction affects more than compliance. It can determine whether Amazon receives your inventory quickly, whether units are mixed with identical inventory from other sellers, and whether you incur unplanned prep fees. Getting labels right before freight leaves your warehouse is one of the simplest ways to protect availability and control FBA costs.

Which Products Need FBA Labeling?

A product needs an Amazon barcode label, commonly called an FNSKU label, when Amazon requires your seller-specific barcode for that unit. The FNSKU connects the item to your account and its exact listing in Amazon's catalog.

In most cases, this includes products that do not have an eligible manufacturer barcode, products that you want tracked as seller-owned inventory, and products in categories or programs where Amazon requires an FNSKU. It also includes items for which the existing UPC or EAN does not match the listing accurately or cannot be scanned reliably.

The label must be applied to every individual sellable unit. If you send 200 individual units to FBA, each unit needs the required barcode. A barcode on the master carton does not replace unit-level labeling.

Amazon may allow an existing UPC or EAN to serve as the inventory identifier for eligible products. This is often referred to as manufacturer barcode tracking. Eligibility is determined by Amazon, product type, and the setup selected for the listing or shipment. Do not assume a visible UPC means no FNSKU label is needed. Confirm the barcode requirement in Seller Central before preparing inventory.

Products that usually require an FNSKU label

FNSKU labeling is commonly required for private-label products, retail arbitrage or wholesale items that are not approved for manufacturer barcode tracking, and products without a scannable UPC or EAN. It is also the safer choice for sellers who want their inventory separated from inventory sold by other merchants under the same listing.

Private-label brands generally benefit from using FNSKUs even when a manufacturer barcode may appear to be available. The FNSKU gives Amazon a direct connection between the unit and your seller account. That supports clearer inventory control and avoids relying on another barcode that may not be properly tied to the listing.

Used, collectible, or condition-specific products typically need a seller-specific label as well. The same applies when the unit's original barcode is damaged, hidden by packaging, duplicated incorrectly, or associated with a different variation.

When a UPC May Be Enough

A UPC can be enough only when Amazon confirms that the item is eligible to use the manufacturer barcode. This approach can reduce labeling work, particularly for standard wholesale products that arrive already packaged and barcoded by the brand.

The trade-off is inventory handling. With manufacturer barcode tracking, Amazon may fulfill an order using a like unit from another seller when the products match under the same listing. For sellers moving established, identical products, that may be acceptable. For brands focused on strict inventory ownership, quality control, or lot management, it may not be the preferred setup.

A UPC must also be clear, unique to the correct item, and easy for Amazon to scan. If the package contains multiple barcode types, Amazon may scan the wrong one. When an FNSKU is required, cover all other visible, scannable barcodes unless Amazon's instructions for that product say otherwise. Leaving an uncovered UPC beside an FNSKU is a common preventable error.

Product Types That Need Special Attention

Some inventory can be labeled correctly and still fail FBA prep requirements. The barcode is only one part of making a unit ready for Amazon receiving and fulfillment.

Multipacks and bundles

A multipack sold as one unit needs one scannable barcode for the completed sellable unit, not separate labels for every item inside. The package also needs to make clear that it is intended to be sold as a set. If the components can be separated easily, secure them together using the appropriate packaging method.

Bundles require the same discipline. A bundle assembled by your brand should have a unique listing barcode assigned to the finished bundle. Do not send separately labeled component products and expect Amazon to recognize them as one sellable offer.

Poly-bagged, boxed, and shrink-wrapped items

The FNSKU must be visible and scannable through the final packaging. If a product is placed in a poly bag, apply the label to the outside of the bag unless the barcode remains clearly readable through the plastic. If the item is sealed in an opaque box, the label belongs on the outside of that box.

Avoid placing labels over package seams, curves, openings, or textured areas that make scanning difficult. A clean, flat location is best. If packaging has an existing barcode, make sure it is covered when required.

Consumables and expiration-dated products

Grocery items, supplements, beauty products, and other consumables may have additional FBA rules, including expiration-date formatting and minimum shelf-life requirements. The FNSKU does not replace an expiration date label when one is required.

For expiration-dated inventory, each unit must be prepared so Amazon can identify both the product and its date. Mixed expiration dates in one shipment or carton can add complexity and increase the risk of receiving issues. Keep lots organized before labeling, then verify dates during final quality control.

Apparel, footwear, and loose items

Apparel often needs protective packaging in addition to a barcode label. Shoes may need to remain in their original box, with the FNSKU placed where it can be scanned without opening the packaging. Loose small items, plush products, liquids, and products with sharp edges can require poly bags, bubble wrap, safety packaging, or other prep.

In these cases, label after the final prep step. Applying an FNSKU before an item is bagged or wrapped can result in an obscured barcode or an extra relabeling step later.

Do Shipping Cartons Need Labels Too?

Yes, but carton labels and FNSKU labels serve different purposes. An FNSKU identifies the individual product unit. An FBA box label identifies the shipment carton traveling to Amazon's fulfillment center.

Every shipping carton in an FBA shipment needs the correct box label generated for that shipment. If you split inventory across multiple boxes, each box receives its own label. Do not reuse labels from a prior shipment or place the same carton label on every box unless Amazon generated them that way.

Merchant-fulfilled products do not need FBA labels because they are not being sent to Amazon for fulfillment. However, if that same inventory is later converted to FBA, it must meet Amazon's unit-level labeling and prep requirements before it ships to an Amazon facility.

A Practical FBA Labeling Workflow

The most reliable process starts before inventory reaches the packing table. Create or review the listing, confirm whether Amazon requires an FNSKU or accepts the manufacturer barcode, and print labels only after the final SKU and variation are verified.

At the prep stage, match the product to the label one unit at a time. Check that the product title, size, color, pack count, and condition match the listing. Then apply the label to the finished sellable unit and cover any conflicting scannable codes when necessary.

Before cartons are sealed, run a final scan and count check. Confirm that every unit is labeled, every bundle is secured, and every carton quantity matches the shipment plan. This small checkpoint catches the issues that can otherwise lead to relabeling fees, stranded inventory, or receiving delays.

For growing brands, the harder part is consistency at volume. A dependable FBA prep partner can manage labeling, packaging, carton labeling, and shipment verification as part of a controlled workflow. Ship Zebra helps sellers prepare inventory with the precision needed to move products into FBA without turning their own operation into a labeling station.

FBA labeling is not just a barcode task. It is a handoff between your inventory system, your packaging process, and Amazon's receiving operation. Confirm the requirement for each SKU, label the final sellable unit, and build a quality check before every shipment leaves the warehouse.
